It seems that Muslim sister power is taking over the world and we just love it! And here is further proof: on August 17, the new season of Project Runway premiered and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a Muslim fashion designer featured front and center!
Ayana Ife, Brooklyn native and current Salt Lake City resident tried four times to get accepted onto the show and the fourth time was the trick. How about this little tidbit too—according to an interview with Deseret News, Ayana brought designs to the audition that were not modest to show that she could branch out, but the judges told her that wasn’t what they wanted. “They were saying, ‘No, don’t bring us that stuff. Bring us what you do,’” she said. “’If you can sew, you can make whatever you want. Bring us your company. Bring us your brand.’ That pushed me to be myself.” We just love that story. The judges wanted her to be herself and actually championed modest fashion.

Ayana goes on to explain her passion for modest fashion and the need for more options for Islamic women. “I’ve seen too many girls wearing long sleeve T-shirts under prom dresses and that hurts my feelings,” Ayana said. “I’ve seen so many of us wearing cardigans and just layering and we’re hot. It’s like, why are we even doing this? Can someone just make a long sleeve top? Why is it so hard to come by these things that are just so simple? … I feel like it’s in my best interest to step up to the plate and say, ‘Here I am. I’m going to make all these amazing things that are modest.'”
More power to you Ayana! We can’t wait to watch the progress of this Muslim role model this season on Project Runway. You can watch the show Thursdays at 7 p.m. on Lifetime.
